The Bureau of Standards Jamaica invites applications to fill the position of: 

Technician, Electrical & Electronics Branch

Job Summary

The Technician under the general guidance of a Senior Technical Officer or a Senior Metrologist, applies knowledge of measurement science and electrical/electronics engineering to calibrate electrical measuring instruments, maintain calibration standards and test equipment and/or conduct conformity tests on electrical/electronic products to ensure conformance to local and international safety or performance standards in the interest of public safety and fair trade. 

Core Functions:

• Prepare test items in accordance with technical standards and/or work instructions

• Perform conformance testing and assessment of electrical/electronic products/appliances

• Update Job Management Database to ensure easy monitoring and tracking of test/calibration items

• Assist with research for the development of national standards for electrical practices, processes and products

• Perform routine maintenance on testing/calibration equipment according to schedule and relevant procedures

• Assist in development projects for the product testing laboratories and/or metrology laboratories by making recommendations for equipment and accessories

• Calibrate voltage, current and resistance measuring instruments and/or temperature measuring instruments/devices

• Assist  in maintaining primary and/or intrinsic calibration standards

• Prepare calibration/test reports as required

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities required:

• Working knowledge of the Standards and Weights and Measures Act

• Working knowledge of maintenance practices and procedures

• Working knowledge of technical report writing

• Working knowledge of quality management systems

• Ability to meet stipulated deadlines

• Ability to multi-task

• Ability to demonstrate initiative

• Excellent trouble-shooting skills

• Good interpersonal skills

• Good written and oral communication skills

• Good customer service attitude

Minimum Qualification and Experience:

• Diploma in Electrical/Electronics Engineering or its equivalent, from a recognized tertiary institution

• Competent in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, Access)

• At least two (2) years related experience in a laboratory environment
